Penelope Prochnow co-authors regional analysis of snow presence publication
Penelope Prochnow, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, majoring in Data Science, is first author in a publication in the Journal of Hydrometeorology.
The paper, titled "Regional Analysis of Snow Presence Trends in the Northern Hemisphere," utilized statistical methodologies to analyze the presence of snow across the Northern Hemisphere from 1980 to 2023.
Of the cells studied over the Northern Hemisphere that meet the quality control requirements, 9.4% indicated a statistically significant positive trend, while 23.8% reported a statistically significant negative trend, indicating a roughly 2.5:1 ratio of area with snow-cover declines relative to snow-cover increases.
Other authors on the project include Penelope's faculty mentor, Dr. Jon Woody; Assistant Professor of Statistics, JiaJie Kong; MSU Graduate currently pursuing a Ph.D. at University of Carlifornia, Los Angeles, and Dr. Jamie Dyer; Professor of Meteorology & Climatology.
Penelope has been involved in other projects including contributing to a book chapter, a conference paper, working on a dissertation.
