Kenneth Swan co-authors tornado research publication

Kenneth Swan, a senior year Geosciences major student at Mississippi State University and Shackouls Honors College has earned co-author credit in a newly published journal article. The study is titled "Quantifying Tornado Outbreak Intensity and Frequency Relationships with Interannual and Monthly Variability."
Other scholars involved in the project include Dr. Andrew Mercer, Professor of Meteorology, and Adonte Knight, a Ph.D. candidate—both from the Department of Geosciences at Mississippi State University.
The paper, published in the journal, Atmosphere, introduces a novel method for defining and ranking outbreaks of severe weather, specifically tornadoes, as spatially cohesive areas of tornado reports.
Swam's contribution to the project included writing code to ingest the storm reports and create the rankings, making plots, and responding to reviewer feedback.
